The September Beauty Reset: 7 Simple Beauty Swaps for Women Over 50

September always feels like a fresh start.

Summer isn’t quite ready to leave us—especially here in Texas—but there’s still something about September that makes me want to refresh my routine. I start reaching for richer colors, softer textures, a little more moisture, and those beauty products that make me feel pulled together without requiring a full face of makeup.

And after 50, I’ve learned that a beauty reset doesn’t mean buying an entirely new makeup bag.

Sometimes, it’s simply about making a few thoughtful swaps.

Here are seven simple ways I’m transitioning my beauty routine into September.

1. Trade Lightweight Moisture for a Little More Hydration

As we move toward fall, mature skin can start asking for more moisture.

If your summer moisturizer has been very lightweight, September is a good time to introduce a slightly richer moisturizer or hydrating serum. Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides, glycerin, peptides, and squalane.

The goal isn’t greasy skin. We want skin that looks comfortable, soft, and beautifully hydrated.

And yes, sunscreen stays in the routine. September does not mean SPF season is over.

2. Let Your Foundation Get a Little Lighter

One of my favorite beauty lessons after 50 is this: more makeup doesn't necessarily mean better makeup.

Heavy foundation can sometimes settle into fine lines and texture, so I prefer a skin tint, tinted moisturizer, lightweight foundation, or simply concealer where I need it.

I want my skin to look like skin.

A little redness, a freckle, or some natural texture showing through is perfectly okay. The goal is polished—not covered.

3. Bring Back the Berry, Plum and Wine Lip Colors

Now this is where September gets fun.

After months of pinks, corals, and summer glosses, I love slowly bringing deeper lip colors back into rotation.

Think:

• Berry
• Raisin
• Plum
• Wine
• Rose brown
• Deep nude

You don't necessarily need an opaque lipstick, either. A sheer berry balm or glossy plum lip can give you that fall feeling without looking too heavy.

And on deeper skin tones? These shades can be absolutely gorgeous.

4. Switch Powder Blush for Cream

If your blush has started looking a little dry or disappearing into your makeup, try a cream or liquid formula.

Cream blush can bring that soft, healthy-looking flush back to mature skin.

Instead of automatically reaching for bright pink, September is a beautiful time to experiment with berry, warm rose, terracotta, mauve, or plum.

Start with a tiny amount and build slowly.

We want “I just came back from a lovely walk,” not “my blush entered the room five minutes before I did.” 😄

5. Give Your Brows a Softer Touch

Brows frame the entire face, but they don't have to be overly sculpted.

If you've been using a very dark brow pencil, try going slightly softer and filling only the areas that need a little help.

Tiny hair-like strokes followed by a brow gel can make the entire face look more polished while still looking natural.

After 50, softness can be incredibly flattering.

6. Don't Forget Your Hands, Neck and Décolletage

Our skincare routine shouldn't stop at the jawline.

Whatever moisturizer I'm applying to my face, I like to remember my neck and upper chest, too. And keep a hand cream nearby—especially as the weather eventually becomes cooler and drier.

Those areas deserve some beauty love too.

7. Choose One Thing That Makes You Feel Beautiful

This might be my favorite September beauty tip.

Pick one little beauty ritual that's simply for you.

Maybe it's putting on lipstick before leaving the house.

Maybe it's wearing your favorite fragrance even when you're staying home.

Maybe it's finally learning how to apply false lashes.

Maybe it's getting your brows done, painting your nails, wearing your favorite earrings, or taking five extra minutes with your skincare routine.

Beauty after 50 isn't about chasing the face we had at 25.

It's about caring for the woman we are today.

Your September Beauty Edit

If you don't want to overhaul your entire routine, start with five things:

Hydrate. Add SPF. Soften your complexion. Bring back a beautiful berry lip. Find one beauty ritual that makes you feel good.

That's enough.

September can be our little bridge between summer and fall—a chance to edit what isn't working, rediscover what we love, and make room for a few things that feel fresh.

Because beauty at this stage of life doesn't need more rules.

It needs more joy.

Taylor-Made Tip: Before buying another beauty product this month, shop your own makeup drawer. Pull out the lipsticks, blushes, fragrances, and skincare you haven't touched lately. You may already have your perfect September beauty routine waiting for you.

Here’s to entering the new season hydrated, polished, confident—and with a fabulous lip color close by.

What’s one beauty product or ritual you're bringing back for fall?
